Tour de France: Mark Cavendish promises to push
MARK CAVENDISH knows he could be overtaken as the Tour de France points classification leader in today's final Pyrenean stage.
The 26-year-old HTC- Highroad sprinter successfully defended the green jersey yesterday as world champion Thor Hushovd (Garmin- Cervelo) won the 152.5- kilometre 13th stage from Pau to Lourdes.
Cavendish, who now has 264 points, saw his lead trimmed in the race for the maillot vert with Jose Joaquin Rojas (Movistar) 13 points behind in second and Philippe Gilbert (Omega Pharma-Lotto) third, 11 points further adrift.
Cavendish, who knows he will likely struggle to score points on today's 168.5km 14th stage from Saint-Gaudens to Plateau de Beille, said: "I'm not comfortable in the green jersey - I've got to keep pushing away at it."
The overall favourites all finished in a group of 54, seven minutes 37 seconds behind Hushovd, as Thomas Voeckler (Europcar) retained the race leader's yellow jersey.
