FORMER world No 4 Thomas Enqvist is looking forward to defending his title when the Brodies Champions of Tennis tournament returns to Raeburn Place in Edinburgh from 19 to 22 June.
“I’m very happy to come back and play and try to defend my title in Edinburgh,” said the Swede, who won the inaugural event at the home of Edinburgh Accies rugby club last year.
Around 10,000 spectators saw the action last year, watching players such as John McEnroe, Goran Ivanisevic, Greg Rusedski and Tim Henman. Enqvist is the first competitor to be confirmed for this year’s event, with more names expected to be added over the coming few weeks.
The event was marred for some of those spectators by heavy rain and the failure of the roof to keep the court dry, which led to the suspension of play on the Saturday afternoon. This year the roof will be extended, as well as a loyalty package for repeat purchasers of tickets.
“We’ve learned a lot from our first year and have made some significant improvements to the spectator experience, so we’re looking forward to another terrific weekend of tennis from some of the game’s best-known names,” said the tournament director, Viki Mendelssohn.
