“For 37 minutes they completely outplayed us,” said the BBL newcomers’ veteran play-caller, who coached Sunderland against Murray International Metals in an infamous British League clash in the 1980s which became known as the “Battle of Meadowbank” and resulted in a disciplinary inquiry.

But there was no such tension in this week’s friendly which Kings led almost throughout before being pegged back to 74-74 at the end of 40 minutes.

“It’s the first time that this squad has played together and their teamwork was non-existent,” claimed Elderkin.

“I don’t know how we kept in touch as Kings were well-organised, shot well and moved the ball well.

“What won it for us was the front of the half-court press we put on with three minutes to go of regulation time and in overtime we moved the ball well for the first time – but I still feel we were lucky.”

Kings international guard Paddy Campbell, who had a shot to win the game with under two seconds left of normal time but missed, said: “I thought I had a great look and felt confident pulling the trigger but as soon as it left my hand I knew it was off – I’ll hit the next one,” he promised.

Kings face the Glasgow Rocks in the BBL Cup first round at the Kelvin Hall a week on Sunday.
