Taylor and McKee get the nod for Frankfurt event
GILMERTON flyweight Josh Taylor and Fauldhouse light welterweight Robbie McKee have been chosen to box for Scotland at the multi-national Brandenburg Cup in Frankfurt next month.
Confirming the talented eastern duo's selection for the event, which will take place from 3-8 September, Scottish Senior National coach Kevin Smith said: "Although Josh underperformed at the British Youth championships in Portobello in June, he is still a class performer who did himself and his country proud last season internationally, so I had no hesitation in nominating him for the German tournament.
"Robbie should have been awarded a clear points verdict in the Portobello tournament but the judges gave the decision to his Welsh opponent, Dale Evans. Robbie boxed and fought brilliantly that day so his selection for this German competition is fully merited."
Meanwhile, Sparta coach Mark Geraghty has confirmed that he will take a team of boxers to the Highlands training camp at Lochaber run by Scotland youth coach Peter Harrison. He said: "Peter set up a club in Lochaber with local coach Neil McFarlane, so I'll be taking a 20-strong squad to the Phoenix club in Lochaber for some tough pre-season training and sparring sessions on August 28. We have a club show coming up in September at the Hibs Social Club off Easter Road so my aim is to ensure that my boxers fully purge themselves of close-season ring rust at the training camp.
"Peter was my coach during my pro ring career and his coaching methods certainly rubbed off on me. The success we had last season was partly down to the coaching methods I picked up from Peter and passed on to my boxers. My aim is for the Sparta club to be even more successful this season, hence our Highland trip."
