St Mirren's Potter keeps cool over cup tilt at Rangers

ST MIRREN captain John Potter is experienced enough to know that victory over Rangers in Saturday's Homecoming Scottish Cup semi-final to complete an Old Firm cup double will not mean the Paisley club deserves to win the tournament for the first time in 22 years.

A home win over Celtic in the quarter-finals – courtesy of a Billy Mehmet penalty – was rewarded with another tough test against the Ibrox side while Clydesdale Bank Premier League basement club Falkirk were paired with Irn-Bru First Division side Dunfermline.

Potter, 29, accepts that an unusual double over the Glasgow giants while fighting an on-going relegation battle in the SPL might be considered worthy of winning the trophy itself, but he will not be getting carried away in the event of another shock cup win at the national stadium.

"It doesn't work that way," he said. "If we could get the right result then we would have another difficult game in the final.

"But we have beaten one of the Old Firm and if we beat the other then we have a good chance.

"However, we won't look that far ahead. Rangers are playing well and they have won their last four games," Potter added.
