Edinburgh’s Doug Kempsell was the matchwinner as Scotland scored an epic 2-1 victory over Finland to stay on course to finish ninth at the World Team Squash Championships in Mulhouse, France last night.

Greg Lobban lost the opening rubber to Henrik Mustonen despite leading 2-1, but Alan Clyne then scored a rollercoaster win over Olli Tuominen, edging the deciding game 11-9 after throwing away a two-game advantage.

Kempsell had been rested on Wednesday when Scotland lost to England, and coach Roger Flynn’s decision paid off as the 20-year-old beat Matias Tuomi in the winner-takes-all final match. Kempsell dropped the opening game before storming back to win 8-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-5.

The Scots face the United States next as they bid to reach tomorrow’s ninth place play-off final.
