It ain't Nessie so

I was interested to read about the court battle over Nessie centres (your report, 1 July). However, instead of fighting over who has the "right" to promote Nessie, there should be moves to provide more protection for the famous cryptid.

Readers may be interested to know that Champ - the beloved "sea monster" of Vermont's Lake Champlain (USA) - is officially protected under law, thanks to the state governments of Vermont and New York.

The creature is of great local importance to Vermont, so much so that he is the mascot of the local baseball team and Champ Day is held annually in August. Perhaps we can learn a thing or two from Vermont.
