Speedway: Tabaka makes promising start to Monarchs' career

EDINBURGH Scotwaste Monarchs' new Hungarian signing Jozsef Tabaka made his British speedway debut at Scunthorpe's winter meeting.

And he displayed glimpses of real promise in the freezing, yet muddy conditions, to score a decent eight points from his five rides.

Tabaka started off with two third places before notching up a victory in heat nine.

He picked up three points from his last two outings, which were careful as opposed to spectacular, and he said afterwards: "I had not raced for a month and, by the end of the meeting, my hands were almost frozen.

"But I was happy enough with my performance."

His Monarchs teammate Andrew Tully, a former Scunthorpe rider, didn't fare quite so well round his old track.

He burst through the tapes in his first ride – then fell three times thereafter.

King's Lynn's Kevin Doolan was the overall winner of the meeting, which attracted an excellent festive crown in almost sub-zero conditions.
