Speedway: Morris could hold the key to Monarchs' title charge

Edinburgh Scotwaste Monarchs are now tantalisingly close to claiming their third British Premier League speedway crown.

And they look set to clinch the title at either Stoke or Glasgow this weekend - that's providing they take care of King's Lynn Stars at the Norfolk Arena tonight.

But hopes are high of success following their recent 22-point triumph in the Knockout Cup.

Newcastle Diamonds kept the pressure on Monarchs with home and away wins over Glasgow and they are now on 48 points, nine behind the Capital outfit. Monarchs require just five points from their remaining five fixtures to make absolutely sure. If Monarchs claim all four points at stake this evening they would need just a point against Stoke on Saturday or Glasgow on Sunday to uncork the champagne.

Monarchs boss John Campbell said: "The title is still in our own hands and as I've said all season, we go into every match believing we can win."

For new signing Ashley Morris his arrival at Armadale last week could prove to be the stuff of fairytales. Not only is the 16-year-old in line for a winner's medal with Monarchs, he could make it a double gold if his other team, Dudley Heathens, claim the National League championship, they are currently just three points behind leaders Newport with a match in hand.

"That would look pretty cool on my CV," said Morris, "But there is still a way to go yet."

The teenager made his debut in Monarchs colours against Somerset Rebels on Friday and picked up two points in their easy 58-35 win.

Morris could prove an ace in the pack tonight as he knows the King's Lynn circuit well. "The secret is to attack it and if you do that it becomes easier," he said.
