Speedway: Monarchs land Potters ace Webster
Edinburgh MONARCHS today named 22-year-old Stoke Potters rider Tim Webster as Lee Dicken's reserve replacement. And, subject to British Speedway Promoters' Association approval, the Englishman will make his debut against Newcastle Diamonds at Armadale tomorrow night.
Webster, who recently won the National League Pairs crown with his team-mate Simon Lambert, was not on Monarchs' radar, according to co-promoter John Campbell. "He was not a name I looked at, but my co-promoter Alex Harkess took a call from Tim's father last week saying if there was a spot in the Edinburgh team, he would be interested in joining us," said Campbell. "I then started to look at his form and I thought this guy is worth having a look at."
Webster, who will drive up from his Cornwall home for Monarchs' home meetings, said: "Riding in the Premier League is a big jump for me and very different to the National League, but I'm delighted Edinburgh asked me to race for them."
Campbell added: "Tim is in a challenging position and I can't tell how he will cope with that. He has bags of confidence and tells me he has great equipment and is desperate for a chance at Premier League level."
Webster will miss Monarchs' trip to Leicester Lions on Saturday as the Potters, who ride on the same night, have priority on his services, but this is the only clash of dates.
