Speedway: Harkess wins top job in British speedway
EDINBURGH Scotwaste Monarchs co-promoter Alex Harkess is the new chairman of the British Speedway Promoters Association.
He is the first Scot ever to hold the role after being voted in yesterday at the start of the annual promoters' Annual General Meeting in Bournemouth.
He succeeds Pete Togood, who stood down after five years in the chair due to business interests.
The news has been welcomed by Monarchs fans and one commented: "This is a great honour for Alex and acknowledges all his hard work as a management committee member.
"The appointment also reflects well on Edinburgh Speedway."
Fellow Monarchs promoter John Campbell added: "I'm very pleased for Alex and I'm sure he'll do a tremendous job in charge."
Harkess has previously served as BSPA vice-chairman but the top job will present some big challenges, given that the sport, especially at Elite League level, didn't have its problems to seek this season."
