Speed skating: No 1 Elise Christie on track with Calgary silver
Elise Christie: celebrations
Livingston short-track speed skater Elise Christie is celebrating becoming the new world No 1 after winning a silver medal in the first World Cup event of the new season in Canada.
Christie reached both 1000 metres finals in the competition in Calgary, recovering from a collision to finish second in the first race behind South Korea’s Soyoun Lee, before crashing out in the second final.
Christie said: “There have been some ups and downs. Because it’s been the double 1000m I’ve had to race a 10,000m in total, which is really tough. But I’m happy with how I’ve raced.”
GB short-track performance director Stuart Horsepool said: “Elise has committed to each race and she will be able to take a lot of confidence away from the weekend, in terms of both her race strategies and her ability to cope with the high workloads of competition.”
The second World Cup event of the season begins in Montreal on Friday.
