Craig MacGillivray slips out of World Amateur Snooker Championship

CRAIG MacGillivray’s hopes of winning the World Amateur Snooker Championship ended yesterday in Sofia, Bulgaria when he lost 5-2 to Ireland’s Brendan O’Donaghue at the last-32 stage.

MacGillivray started the match sluggishly and found himself three frames down, however he got back into contention with breaks of 54 and 53 to trail by only one frame.

O’Donaghue was in no mood to fold, though, and the Irishman who lost out to Perth’s Scott Donaldson earlier this year in the final of the European Amateur Championship duly won the next two frames to secure his place in the last 16.

Glasgow’s Pat McKinney is now the only Scot left still in contention to return with silverware after fellow Glasgow player Lance Little lost in a final-frame decider 4-3 to Hong Kong’s Ng Yam Shui. McKinney eased into the last 16 event of the Masters event after whitewashing Kuwait’s Ahmad Altarkait and now plays Zemarai Hassas of Afghanistan.
