Smith stands firm in ruling out return to Scotland job
WALTER Smith has indicated he will not be moved from his already firmly stated intention not to return for a second spell as Scotland manager.
Despite outlining his position on the issue two weeks ago, following the dismissal of George Burley, the Rangers manager continues to be rated as one of the favourites for the job by the bookmakers.
The SFA has also stressed that they will not be discouraged from approaching anyone they regard as a desirable candidate, irrespective of earlier comments which appear to rule them out.
That has sparked fresh speculation this week that Smith will be sounded out over a return to the role he filled successfully from 2004 to 2007. But the 61-year-old yesterday insisted there has been no change in his attitude. "I have got nothing further to say on that," he said. "That's it finished with as far as I'm concerned."
It is understood the SFA has yet to make any contact with Smith. While it is believed he would be happy to offer any advice sought about the recruitment process, senior Rangers sources are adamant he will not be tempted back under any circumstances.
Smith previously stated his decision to walk out on Scotland to return for a second spell in charge of Rangers in January 2007 persuaded him it would be inappropriate to become national team manager again. "I feel as though I have had my shot at it," he said.
