Scots eye Shinty/Hurling glory

New Scotland cap Neale Reid finished his last match against Ireland with a mangled arm and a heavy heart. Now he hopes to mark his graduation to the senior side with the Marine Harvest quaich and a clean bill of health.

Ronald Ross’ Scots face Ireland’s Hurlers at Bught Park in Inverness today eager to build on the home win against the greens last year in the highland capital.

If that was to come to pass, it would be a memorable first outing for Glen Urquhart forward Reid, whose last appearance in Shinty/Hurling ended in agony. Not only did the Scotland Under-21 side he was part of fall to a late comeback from Ireland in Ennis, dry stane dyker Reid ended up with a broken arm and a restless night in a hotel room.

He is hopeful of a more pleasant experience today in the first match of the home-and-away double-header with Jeffrey Lynskey’s men.

“I played at Under-21 level when Ronald Ross was the Under-21 manager and it feels great now to get the call-up to the full side. I come to watch these matches every year,” said the 24-year-old. “My last Under-21 game was pretty demoralising because we lost by just a few points but we had.”
