Sickly Westwood rues decision to take part

LEE Westwood signed for 73, two over par, and admitted he shouldn't have teed up in the Barclays Scottish Open after contracting a chest infection and enduring a sleepless night on the eve of the championship.

"It was stupid to go out, especially with the Open next week," rued the Englishman, who was runner-up at the French Open on Sunday and has been identified by Gary Player as a serious contender at Turnberry.

When he ran up a double bogey at the tenth, bogey at the 11th and par at the 12th, the Ryder Cup man, who was playing in the same group as Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy, appeared to be suffering from breathing difficulties and was clutching his chest.

"What started as hay fever has become a chest infection," he said. "For the first time in my life, I managed to not sleep a single second throughout the night. I did think about not playing and probably shouldn't have played. I'm p***** off because I've been playing well and everything feels like it is in the right place. Then I stood on range this morning feeling completely dizzy.

"I only got about four hours sleep on Tuesday night and didn't sleep a wink last night. I haven't taken any medication but I should have withdrawn. I just thought it was best with the Open coming up to try to play."

A former Scottish Open champion, Westwood suffered for tonsillitis for years and eventually had his tonsils removed in November. His health has improved this year, at least until now.

While it remains to be seen whether Westwood will be fit to start today's second round, Thomas Bjorn, another past champion at Loch Lomond, pulled out of the tournament after complaining of headaches and double-vision. England's Seve Benson took his place.
