Second Division: High five for Ayr sets up crucial clash with Raith

AYR United boosted their goal difference at the top of the Second Division when they saw off struggling Stranraer 5-0 at Somerset Park to set up a cracker of a match on Saturday at second-placed Raith Rovers. Bryan Prunty's header opened the floodgates with Ryan Stevenson and Neil McGowan adding goals before half time.

Skipper Chris Aitken and substitute Alex Williams then scored in the second period.

Ayr manager Brian Reid hailed the contribution of loan signing from St Johnstone, Kevin James, saying: "Kevin has come in for his leadership qualities and he showed them in abundance today. He will help our other players by talking to them throughout matches." Stranraer have now lost 20 goals in their lost six games.

Second-placed Raith sprung a surprise by including centre back Marvin Andrews as a trialist in their 1-0 win at New Bayview against East Fife. Andrews, who has not played in over a year, was the bedrock on which John McGlynn's men built their third win of the season over their neighbours. Graham Weir scored the winner with 15 minutes to go.

Peterhead stay third after drawing 1-1 with visitors Queen's Park. Ian Watt put the Glasgow side ahead early in the second half only for Stuart Anderson to notch a quickfire equaliser.

Brechin hold on to the final play-off spot after a goalless draw at Arbroath.

Stirling got back to winning ways with a 3-2 triumph at Alloa. David McKenna ensured all three points went to Stirling when he converted a pass 17 minutes from time from on-loan Dundee United midfielder Ryan McCord.
