Second division: Danny Lennon glad to bounce back against Peterhead

DANNY Lennon's Cowdenbeath showed they had no Scottish Cup hangover as they bounced back from their midweek disappointment at being beaten at Alloa, to win 2-0 at Peterhead. The Fifers made it seven wins in nine unbeaten league games to keep their lead at the top over Stirling Albion on goal difference.

Jon Robertson flicked the ball in during the first half and towering defender Joe Mbu rifled home in the second period to make it seven goals for and none against in their two matches with the Blue Toon this season.

"We were all disappointed with the result in midweek, so it was a fantastic reaction from the boys and they deserve immense credit," said Lennon.

Peterhead's Neale Cooper said: "That was our worst performance of the season on our own pitch."

Arbroath's 40-year-old boss Jim Weir had to pull his boots on for the first time competitively since playing for St Johnstone against Clyde, on the opening day of the season in August 2006, when he replaced Alan Rattray after 31 minutes of their 4-3 defeat to Stirling Albion at Gayfield.

Paul Murphy and a double from David O'Brien had Albion three ahead by half time, however Arbroath came back fighting in the second half and headers from Hislop, who scored two, and Bryan Scott had them level with just seven minutes left only for Michael Mullen to ruin Weir and his players' day by firing home from close range right at the death. Weir said: "It is hard to take getting beat after battling back so well."

Alloa consolidated their third place by seeing off Brechin City 2-1. Manager Allan Maitland made good use of his substitutes, with both Brian Carrigan and Scott Agnew coming off the bench to score. Carrigan netted from the spot after a handball in the visitors' box with 14 minutes to go, however Brechin's Charlie King failed from 12 yards out five minutes later when he sent a penalty against a post.

Agnew fired in a second in the last minute with Rory McAllister netting a late consolation.

East Fife won in fine style, 3-0 at Dumbarton, with Paul McManus scoring in the first half and Jonathan Smart along with David Muir netting in the second. Assistant manager Scott Crabbe said: "We deservedly won the three points with our best performance of the season."

Clyde's revival under John McCormack was halted as Stenhousemuir beat them 1-0 win at Ochilview to keep the Bully Wee at the foot of the table. Warriors midfielder Craig Malloy timed his run into the box to perfection to receive a pass from Iain Thomson and shoot home 12 minutes from time to win the points.
