Scots women slump to Dutch
SCOTLAND slumped to a second successive defeat in the ICC Women’s European championship as the Netherlands recorded a five-wicket victory.
Following Monday’s crushing ten-wicket loss to hosts Ireland at Clontarf, when the Scots were bowled out for just 85, they made a better fist of things with the bat at Dublin’s North County ground yesterday as they posted 228 for seven from their 50 overs.
However, the Dutch were able to reach the target with five overs to spare and for the loss of five wickets. Once again failures from the opening pair, Charlotte Bascombe (3) of Murrayfield DAFS and Catherine Smaill (0) of Peebles put the Scots on the back foot. But a fine third-wicket stand of 135 from captain Kari Anderson (63) of Stirling County and Carlton’s Leigh Kasperek (58) got them back in the game. Kathryn White of Peebles also weighed in with a sprightly 40 off 47 balls.
However, a brilliant 87 not out from opener Violet Wattenberg anchored the Dutch comfortably home. The Scots have a rest day today before the tournament finishes with a day of Twenty20 action tomorrow.
