Scots coach hails young Lothian boxer

SCOTTISH national youth boxing coach Peter Harrison hailed the performance of 14-year-old Midlothian boxer Dylan Moffat, who took Silver in the British Youth boxing championships.

Moffat, of Danderhall, lost 9-3 to England's Jackson Collins in the 1994 48kgs class final at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, and Harrison said: "He boxed very well against a more experienced opponent. A silver medal in his very first international ring appearance isn't bad going.

Dylan has bags of promise at this level and will get even better with more experience."

However, star performer among the East of Scotland contingent was Kelty light-flyweight Fraser Gorn, who outpointed England's Kildare Ward 9-6 to take Scotland's only gold medal.

Meanwhile, in a weakened Cardenden club show at Kirkcaldy, Liam Moles of Denny, who eliminated Sparta's Dave Cowan from the 2008 senior championships last month, dented Sparta hopes again by beating Sparta's lightweight champion, Brian Lacey, by 5-2 in tough tussle.

Similarly, Stirling welterweight, George Thomson, added to the Capital boxing contingent's woe when out-pointing Mike Blackburn 17-13 of the Lochend club.

GILMERTON pro welterweight Gary McMillan will box a selected opponent on the undercard of the Alex Arthur versus Joan Guzman WBO title fight at Meadowbank on May 3.
