Scots seek Seville win
EISENHOWER Trophy winners Gavin Dear and Wallace Booth headline a strong Scots line-up in the Spanish Open Amateur championship which starts today at the Royal Golf Club of Seville.
The Perthshire duo are two of 11 Scots competing in the event, which boasts a list of past winners including Jose-Maria Olazabal, Darren Clarke and Sergio Garcia. Also in the international field are last season's SGU No1 Steven McEwan, former Scottish champion Glenn Campbell and St Andrews Links Trophy winner Keir McNicoll.
The format of this week's contest is 36-holes of strokeplay qualifying with the top 32 players progressing to the matchplay stages starting on Friday.
Meanwhile, Sandy Lyle will look to put his Ryder Cup captaincy disappointment behind him and get his year off to winning start in the European Senior Tour's Brunei Senior Masters this week. The former US Masters and Open champion, who lost out to countryman Colin Montgomerie in the race for the European skipper's role in 2010, is one of a host of Scots competing in the curtain-raiser to the over-50s circuit.
Sam Torrance will be chasing his 11th senior title while Ross Drummond, John Chillas, Mike Miller, Bill Longmuir and former Ryder Cup captain Bernard Gallacher all tee-up.
• Bruntsfield Links in Edinburgh has been added to list of qualifying venues for the Open Championship, alongside Buckinghamshire Golf Club, Hankley Common and Moortown Golf Club.
