Scots referees 'close to striking' over managers' criticism - Stuart Dougal
EX-FIFA referee Stuart Dougal claims Scottish officials are considering strike action over recent attacks on them by managers.
• Stuart Dougal has warned that refs in Scotland could organise a day of industrial action
Referees have come under fire from some Clydesdale Bank Premier League bosses of late, with Motherwell's Jim Gannon particularly outspoken in his criticism of them and Scottish Football Association head of referee development Hugh Dallas.
Dallas has admitted there are problems with officiating in Scotland.
But he and Scottish Senior Football Referees' Association chairman Martin Cryans are unhappy with the nature of managers' attacks, which they believe risk calling into question officials' integrity and professionalism.
Cryans last week revealed referees could resort to legal action if the outbursts continue and Dougal has now warned: "Referees are close to calling for a day of industrial action.
"If people are fed up with the decision-making of our referees, maybe they should face a Saturday afternoon without any decisions being made at all.
"I know the strength of feeling and solidarity that exists on this issue and, if there is a belief the endorsement of a day of action is the only way to get their point across, it will be taken.
"It has already been discussed by senior members of the refereeing movement if unhelpful comments from managers such as Gannon continue. This warning should be taken seriously."
He added: "The personal vilification of our officials has gone far enough. But that's not to say officials are not open to dialogue so let's bring our most experienced managers and refs together."
