Scots claim slice of glory in Argentina
DAKAR RALLY: South African Giniel de Villiers won the Dakar Rally for the first time in a diesel-powered Volkswagen, but two Scots were left celebrating notable firsts for themselves when the 9500-kilometre event finished in Buenes Aires.
De Villiers triumphed in front of 500,000 fans in the Argentine city having pipped his American team-mate Mark Miller by just 8mins 59secs,
but Lanark’s Alister McRae and Glasgow’s Ewan Buchan were both pleased to have completed the world’s most gruelling rally on their first attempts – Buchan, with a suspected broken ankle, becoming the first Scot to do so on a motorbike.
“It’s fantastic to get to the finish on our first attempt,” McRae admitted. “It’s been bloody hard, but I’m well chuffed.”
