BADMINTON: Last month, Alex Dunn (Dalziel High School) claimed a hat-trick of titles at the Under-15 York Gold Championships – he’s done it again at the February event at Milton Keynes.

In the Star singles, Dunn won both his group matches before beating England’s Andrew Heinemann in the semi-finals and joint-third seed Adam Lam in the final, winning all his matches in straight games.

Top seed Holly Newall (Glasgow School of Sport), another hat-trick winner in York, took the girls’ under-15 Star title with an equally impressive display. She won two well-contested group matches before beating Avon’s Kirby Ngan in the semi-finals 19-21 21-9 21-13 and Samodani Wijetunge 20-22 21-18 21-15 in the final.

Alex and Holly, the No 2 seeds, teamed up to take the 32-pair knockout mixed title, beating team-mates Matthew Duguid (Mackie Academy) and Eleanor O’Donnell (Glasgow School of Sport) 21-14 21-11 on the way to taking the title with a 21-18 21-19 win over George Priestman and Elizabeth Tolman. Alex and Matthew, also seeded No 2, caused another upset by lifting the boys’ doubles title with three straight-game wins.
