School skiing: New event hailed as ‘great experience’

The inaugural Snowsport Scotland Schools Alpine Series Finals take place at Cairngorm on Friday – but it’s not all about the winners.

Pupils from three small Stirlingshire primary schools – Killin, Strathyre and Crianlarich – have been inspired by the new event.

“Skiing has been a very positive experience,” said Katie Williams, the head teacher at all three schools. “Competing as a team and individuals is great for the pupils.

“The parents have played a huge part. They have organised the practice sessions and everyone involved has had a great time.”

The schools entered the Alpine Series qualifier at Glencoe and, unfortunately, the Strathyre team of Lottie Hisp, Rebecca Ramsay-Clapham, Freya Stewart Earl and Gabriel Thourmire had to withdraw due to illness.

However, the combined Crianlarich/Killin line-up – Logan Mailer, Ross Ronald, Anna Stitt and Catriona Gammons – finished a creditable sixth in the Primary recreational category.
