Saracens enlist White in advisory role

JAKE WHITE will return to Saracens on a consultancy basis for two weeks in the new year.

South Africa's Rugby World Cup-winning coach spent last week working on defensive drills with Saracens and helped them to a 23-6 win over Worcester in the Guinness Premiership.

White linked up again with Saracens' director of rugby Eddie Jones to coach the Barbarians this week and the pair thrashed out a plan for the new year. After the Barbarians' 18-11 defeat to Australia at Wembley last night, White said: "I will be back at Saracens for a week in January and a week in February."

Jones performed a similar advisory role for White during the Springboks' successful World Cup campaign.

The Barbarians-Australia match was staged to celebrate the centenary of Australia's victory over Great Britain to become 1908 Olympic champions. The British team was represented that day by Cornwall and the Barbarians last night broke with tradition and wore the traditional black and gold Cornish socks.

The Barbarians slumped to 13-0 down after conceding an early try to Lote Tuqiri before fighting back to within two points when Jerry Collins finished off a sparkling run from Shane Williams, but Francois Steyn missed the conversion and a simple penalty before Lachlan Turner raced clear to seal the victory two minutes from time.
