Bonnyrigg's Michael Leslie, 18, sailed through to the last 16 of the World Under-21 Snooker Championships as the knockout stages got underway at the Sheraton Montreal Hotel in Canada.

Leslie, who finished top of his qualifying group with a 100 per cent record, lived up to his nickname of "Lightnin' Leslie" with a 5-0 whitewash of Laurens De Staelen (Belgium), in a match that lasted 75 minutes.

Leslie, who was runner-up in the European Under-21 championship earlier this year, made breaks of 43 and 48 to go 2-0 up before clearing up with a 49 break to win on the black after being 40 behind in the third. Further breaks of 86, 37 and 43 were enough to take the last two frames and book a place in the last 16 against Thailand's Thanawat Thirapongpaiboon.

Perth's Scott Donaldson and Rhys Clark (Hamilton) both went out of the competition at the last 32 stage, leaving Leslie as the only Scottish player still in the event. Clark went out losing 5-3 to Duane Jones (Wales) whilst Donaldson lost out 5-2 to England's Callum Downing.
