Young Scots finish fifth overall after fine win

Scotland secured an overall fifth place in FIRA-AER Under-18 tournament after finishing their campaign with a 29-10 victory over Georgia at the Ciudad Universitaria stadium in Madrid yesterday, writes Alan Lorimer.

The result also means that the young Scots finish the competition with two wins from three matches, their only defeat being a 19-7 reverse against France.

Georgia, 20-18 winners over Italy in the second round, were expected to present a physical challenge and in the event their pick-and-drive game put pressure on the Scots.

But Scotland were able to withstand the threat as head coach, Eddie Pollock confirmed. He said: “We defended very well and when it came to offensive play we produced some very good tries.”

Scotland ran in five tries, three by the Ayr full-back Gavin Lowe, to make him the Scots’ top scorer in the tournament with five touchdowns.
