Stewart’s Melville College into semis after Inverleith victory

STEWART’S Melville College secured their place in the semi-finals of the Brewin Dolphin Scottish Schools Under-18 Cup after defeating their city rivals Edinburgh Academy 15-10 at Inverleith yesterday, writes Alan Lorimer.

Both sides scored two tries apiece but it was the goal kicking of Stew-Mel
stand-off Scott Docherty which provided the winning points for the Inverleith side. Docherty was the key man for the Stew-Mel in other respects, though, as the fly half showed astute game management with cleverly placed kicks that gave his side territorial advantage.

“Scott showed a lot of composure today and got us into good positions,” acknowledged Stew-Mel coach Bryn Lockie.

It was a neatly-placed cross kick by Docherty that allowed full back Ryan Frost to cross for Stew-Mel’s opening score. Docherty converted and then added a penalty for a 10-0 lead. Academy hit back, though, with a try by prop Constan Plevris from a driven line-out.

Stew-Mel were quick out of the blocks in the second half and that man Docherty carved out a try for centre Russell Grant. Academy, after good work by Rory Simpson and Alex Swan, replied with a try by replacement wing Sam Bendit.

Then, with full-time approaching, Academy almost stole the game when Swan intercepted and launched a counter attack but Stew-Mel scrambled their defence to snuff out the danger and ensure victory.
