Rugby: Injury-time converted try sees win snatched from Accies

Edinburgh Accies and their fellow tight-finish specialists Aberdeen Grammar served up a close encounter in their RBS Premiership clash at
Rubislaw. But it was a disappointing afternoon for Accies who had victory snatched from their grasp in the dying seconds.

Tries by Sam Pecqueur, Callum Reid and Lewis Niven plus ten points from Ruaridh Bonner’s boot left the Capital men 13 points clear with ten minutes to play. But a try and conversion for the home side ensured a tense final few minutes. And Aberdeen prevailed 26-25 – their first win of the campaign – with a converted score as the game entered injury time.

Elsewhere, Watsonians moved to the top of the RBS National League with a 51-3 win at Kelso allied to a draw between Hawick and erstwhile pacesetters Glasgow Hawks. Ewan Miller marked his Watsonians debut with a hat-trick of tries, while Rory Steele bagged two and there was one apiece for Scott McKean and Dom Dunnett, while Brian Walls kicked the other points.

Stewart’s Melville continued their rise up the table when they saw off Jed-Forest 26-7. They are now in fourth spot.

Meanwhile, Championship B leaders Musselburgh chalked up a half century of points for a second successive Saturday to beat Morgan Academy 51-13 in Dundee, with Matt Brierly and Steven Ketchin each claiming two of ’Burgh’s seven tries.

And, having broken their duck the previous week, Haddington edged out Kirkcaldy 19-15 at Neilson Park.

Murrayfield Wanderers were only a point adrift at the break in their match at Hawick YM, but the Borderers turned up the heat to emerge 30-22 winners. And it was a grim day for Lasswade who were hammered 71-5 at home to Peebles.
