Rugby: Currie’s slim title hopes take a knock after heavy defeat in Aberdeen

CURRIE’S bid for a top-four finish in the RBS Premiership and a place in next season’s British & Irish Cup remains on track, but the Malleny
Park side’s slender hopes of landing the title look to be over after going down to a 25-9
defeat away to Aberdeen
Grammar.

Jamie Forbes landed three penalties as Currie reached the interval with a 9-3 advantage, but a second half surge by the hosts secured a third successive league win and boosted their bid for top-flight survival.

The defeat leaves Currie third in the table and with their challenge for the silverware now depending on an unlikely string of defeats for both Gala and Ayr.

Meanwhile, Lasswade travelled to face Howe of Fife on RBS Championship League B duty still shell-shocked after conceding a century of points in the previous weekend’s Cup tie against Heriot’s.

However, there was little evidence of a hangover for the Midlothian men as they produced a battling first half effort to reach the interval only 24-16 in arrears.

But the home side stepped up the pace in the second half to clinch the bonus point 41-28 win and take over at the top of the table.

Russell Gladstone touched down twice for Lasswade and Ian Wilson joined him on the score-sheet, while Gavin Brown contributed the rest of the points with two conversions and three penalties.
