Rugby: Currie back in the title hunt after stylish win

Currie will go into this weekend’s RBS Premiership fixture at home to Gala with second place in the table in their sights after the Malleny Park men powered their way back into the title race with a stylish 
47-27 win at Dundee High.

Ross Weston led the charge, bagging two of Currie’s seven tries and there was one apiece for Andrew Binikos, Alan Whittingham, Simeon James, Mike Entwhistle and James Johnstone, while Jamie Forbes banged over six conversions.

Meanwhile, Boroughmuir returned empty handed from their trip to face Gala, despite a gutsy effort that yielded a hat-trick of tries for second rower Will Kay. ‘Muir started poorly and fell 21-0 behind after only 24 minutes, but rallied and cut the deficit to a single point. However, the Borderers stepped up the pace and took advantage of a ‘Muir defence that was short-handed by two yellow cards to pull clear and chalk up a 36-27 win.

In the RBS National League, Watsonians remain on the heels of pacesetters Glasgow Hawks after posting a 31-19 success away to Hillhead/Jordanhill.

Jamie Niven touched down twice and he was joined on the score sheet by Danny Moussa and Tom Hart, all converted by Brian Walls, who also slotted a penalty as the Myreside men 
secured all five league points.

Stewart’s Melville landed their first win of the campaign when they saw off Kelso 43-31 at Inverleith. The sides were locked at 10-10 after a hard-fought first half, but the hosts subsequently clicked into gear and racked up a tally of six tries.

Musselburgh regained top spot in RBS Championship League B when they swept aside erstwhile pacesetters Howe of Fife 49-25 at Stoneyhill. James Murray took his try tally to eight for the season when he bagged another double in an impressive performance by ‘Burgh that leaves them four points clear of nearest challengers Peebles.

Lasswade rediscovered the winning feeling when they emerged on the right side of a 26-16 score line away to Haddington. The home side, who had a try by James Ferguson, led 10-7 at the break, but Lasswade dominated the second period and took all five league points – Derek O’Riordan, Richard Borthwick, Douglas Hearn and Neil Clark scoring a try apiece.

Murrayfield Wanderers enjoyed a 34-23 success at home to Perthshire with Chris Hardie claiming a hat-trick, while Ally Borland scored two and Barry Turnbull the other.
