No talks yet but White would interest Glasgow

GLASGOW coach Sean Lineen has not ruled out the possibility of bringing former Scotland captain Jason White back to the city, but admitted that he has not yet spoken to the player.
White, who turns 34 in April, will leave Clermont Auvergne this summer after three years with the leading French club. White started his pro career with Glasgow Caledonians in 1998 after helping Watsonians to their first Scottish club title and made his Scotland debut in the triumphant Calcutta Cup match of 2000. He moved to Sale in 2003, where he went on to win the Premiership Players’ Player of the Year’ award and then moved to France in 2009.
Lineen confirmed that he was looking for one or two experienced forwards to help develop his crop of young talent, and the second and back rows will need bolstering with Richie Gray leaving for Sale and Johnnie Beattie and John Barclay out of contract this summer and yet to agree new deals.
Lineen said: “There are a number of areas that we’re looking at, and we’ve got a few chats going on about various players – it is full-on at the moment.
“Jason is a fantastic player and has been brilliant for Scotland. He will be 34, but you look at the quality and experience he has from being in France. He’s tough, he’s a leader, he’s Scottish, he’s a good lad and he’s been at Glasgow before.
“You’ve got to get the balance right and one thing I think we’ve done well at Glasgow is promote youngsters, with Rob Harley, Ryan Wilson and Stuart Hogg the latest one coming through, and that’s a massively important part of my job.
“But you also look at the wider picture and recognise that it’s not just the coaches that help young players develop, but the players around them too. You need experienced players on the training paddock, in the analysis, and helping players get into good habits off the field, and not just playing the X-Box 24/7.
“We haven’t spoken to Jason yet, but never say never.”

Saturday, February 18, 2012 at 08:41 AMJase was a good player but not anymore. He's being released from his contract with 12 months left on it. Think that speaks volumes itself. If he's willing to be a bit player at Glasgow for peanuts great. But done waste good money on a squad player when you could be bringing three or four youngsters through. That was how gray was discovered.

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 02:10 PMWould this be the same Glasgow team sitting third in the Rabo that are not setting it on fire?

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 12:21 PMSorry, should have read; I dont recall Glasgow setting the Rabo alight this season but an "old head " (sorry Jas) to guide the young guns through closing out a tight game could mean better numbers in the W column.

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 12:14 PMNot quite sure where 3 & 4 are comming from, FFS the guy is an ex-Scotland captain, a thoroughly respected player and excellent role model! JW would be an excellent mentor to help and develp young back-five players. I dont recall Glasgow setting the Rabo alight this season but an "old head " (sorry Jas) to guide the young guns through closing out a tight game. Plus the work, fitness and lifestyle ethic required for longevity at the top level- fantastic if it comes to fruition..

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 11:57 AM3 & 4 get a grip he is only 33 years old and is still fit enough to play on merit every week. Simon Shaw was almost 38 at the world cup and one of the form players of the tournament. Jason is being picked above some of the best players in Europe for one of the best clubs in Europe so surely he would add to Glasgow? He may play another 3 or 4 years so why not contribute to Scottish Rugby there is no one there presently with that quality so do they bring in another foreigner to replace Gray? I for one would like to still see him in a blue jersey especially with Brown being injured and Beattie’s poor form. He would be massive for Denton and Rennie to learn off and give us a huge edge. Robinson get on the phone to big Jason and Simon at Bath. The Beattie Barclay band wagon has been found out!!

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 11:56 AMIf Glasgow do not want him can we have him at Edinburgh. Still in the Clermont squad a team that is lying second in the French league Would be great to bring the youngsters on and would still give more in a game than many No pension pot top up with him

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 11:46 AM#3 and 4 Lineen needs an experienced guy in the forwards if Beattie and Barclay leave. He is still a strong a leader and has experienced french Rugby, and at 34 you can play 2 morte years at least. He would also be a good mentor for the yooung guys in the squad. I think it is better to bring back former top level Scottish (originally played for the Warriors, good to attract the fans) than some average imports from SH to be pensionners for a year or two!

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 11:01 AMthis is a no no ...he's had his shot and.only after a pension pot top up............would only be holding back a young guy from getting games...no no no Lineen

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 10:18 AMNo No NO. I cannot see how this can be good for Glasgow or Scotland. As great a player for Scotland as JW WAS, I cannot see that bringing a 34 year old flanker to Glasgow would be a good move for the longer term development of the Glasgow game (or the Scotland game).

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 10:17 AMWell he's certainly no Richie Gray (but then no-one else is even close) but he would be a great veteran signing who would help the youngsters in Glasgow develop. Also a "name" to attract fans.

Friday, February 17, 2012 at 09:32 AMIt would be good, and yes Rugby is a team game off the field too...
