National League: Greens profit from Hawks’ call-off to leap into second

HAWICK’s win over Watsonians on Saturday saw the Mansfield Park side leapfrog Glasgow Hawks into second spot after the latter’s home match with Hamilton was called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

At the bottom of the table Jed-Forest gave themselves a crucial early Christmas present by battling past Kelso 11-9 at Riverside Park.

It was just their second league victory in 12 attempts this term, but the win means that they have moved off the basement spot as they head into 2013.

David Gobby scored the only try of the match for the home side, and Iain Chisholm kicked a penalty, but it was a superb 50 metre penalty by Ewan Scott that clinched it for them.

Kelso’s points came through three Murray Hastie penalty kicks.

Biggar are bottom now, but they battled their way to a 19-19 draw against Stewart’s Melville at Inverleith on Saturday.

Hata Wilbore scored two tries for the visitors, with Craig Parker kicking the rest of the 14 points.

For Stewart’s Melville, who were 13-6 up at the interval, tries came from forwards Ben Manning and Chris Damsteegt, while Seb Trotter was on the mark with three penalties.

Weather forced Selkirk’s match with Hillhead/Jordanhill to be moved to the Selkirk Youth Club pitch, and the Borderers head into 2013 in fourth place after winning 13-6 in very muddy conditions.

Darren Clapperton scored a try for Selkirk, with Scott Hendrie kicking eight points, while Hillhead/Jordanhill only had two penalties to show for their afternoon’s efforts.
