Melrose RFC director clarifies points made in yesterday’s report

MELROSE RFC’s director of rugby Mike Dalgetty has clarified points made in a report carried in yesterday’s Scotsman.

In the report of Melrose’s 34-12 defeat at Llandovery, supplied by a freelance agency, Dalgetty was quoted as suggesting that Scottish clubs struggle in the British and Irish Cup due to a lack of support from the SRU. Dalgetty said: “It wasn’t a criticism of the SRU and was taken entirely the wrong way. I was simply discussing the different levels of support in the competition.

“Llandovery use the Scarlets facilities for training sessions early in the week and only train at their club once a week, for example, through the support of the WRU, whereas in Scotland our clubs are independent and self-funded, and we don’t have that kind of set-up here, so we are not as advanced. But that’s not a criticism of anyone.

“We actually receive great support from the SRU, especially in the British and Irish Cup.”
