Lee Armstrong seals key win for Hawick

Lee Armstrong was the hero for RBS National League leaders Hawick as he popped up with an injury-time try to defeat closest rivals Glasgow Hawks 11-6 on Saturday.

The match at Mansfield Park was nip and tuck all the way and the top two were tied at 6-6 going into the final seconds when the in-form Armstrong managed to get over the line. The result leaves the Greens 13 points clear of Hawks in the race for the top spot, with the former having one match left to play and the latter four.

Whatever happens during March, one of them will be going up automatically to the top flight and the other will be in a play-off with the second-bottom RBS Premiership team. On Saturday there was a large crowd at Mansfield Park and this division has certainly thrown up many twists and turns this term.

Indeed, Jed-Forest gave themselves another lifeline with a stunning 32-31 win at Stewart’s Melville. It was their second victory on the bounce and puts them above Biggar and just seven points behind third-bottom Hamilton.

Biggar saw their match with Selkirk postponed due to a frozen pitch at Hartreemill while Hamilton were edged out 17-15 at Hillhead/Jordanhill. Kelso’s good run carried on with a 36-14 victory at Watsonians. The Borderers scored four tries in the bonus point win, ex-Watsonians player Richard Minto leading the way with one against his former team-mates, who are on a poor run.
