In pictures: Classic Scottish rugby moments
Peter Brown (c), David Rollo and Jim Telfer training at Meggetland, 1964
SCOTLAND perhaps hasn’t enjoyed as many great sporting triumphs as other countries, but that just makes each memorable moment all the sweeter.
In Scottish rugby circles, there’s been slightly more disappointment than elation, most recently with last year’s performance in the Rugby World Cup, which left many fans frustrated at less-than-impressive performances against teams such as Romania and Georgia.
In this gallery, comprising a selection of pictures from The Scotsman‘s extensive archive, we take a look back at the period of 1950-1990 in Scottish rugby, including pictures from the 1970 Calcutta Cup victory and that famous Five Nations Grand Slam win over England in 1990 at Murrayfield, when a David Sole-inspired Scotland defeated ‘the Auld Enemy’ 13 - 7, coinciding with the first time ‘Flower of Scotland’ was used as the team’s anthem.
Currently ranked 10th in the world rugby standings, and with the 2012 Six Nations due to begin on February 4th with the Calcutta Cup match at Murrayfield, Scotland will be hoping to rise to the occasion and give their supporters something to cheer about.
For now though, whet your appetite with our gallery of pictures documenting some of the more memorable moments from the last 60 years in Scottish rugby.
