Heriot’s and Currie change for cup tie

Heriot’s, the last Edinburgh team to claim the Scottish clubs’ rugby cup, face a formidable obstacle on the road to Murrayfield tonight when they visit Currie in the regional final.

The Goldenacre outfit make two changes from the squad which went down 30-25 at Dundee in the Premiership with Max Nimmo introduced on the wing for Michael Paterson while the experienced Stewart Mustard is on the bench covering hooker where Fraser Brown is away with the Glasgow professional team.

Currie hopes are boosted considerably by the return of their talisman back rower Ross Weston with Fraser Watts starting again at prop and Mike Erskine providing bench cover.

Also tonight, Watsonians entertain Stewart’s Melville in a national league clash crucial to promotion hopes.

There is an opportunity at stand off for Watsonians’ Andrew Chalmers while Ross Aitken steps in at centre for the injured Tom Hart.

There are two crucial Premiership clashes tomorrow, and none come bigger than at Meggetland where Boroughmuir await Dundee High knowing victory is vital to providing a lifeline.

Bottom placed ’Muir are able to call on Edinburgh pair Sep Visser and Harry Leonard while former pro Ally Davidsion returns to the second row.

Boroughmuir’s task is made harder by the Taysiders striking a rich vein of form by scoring five tries to see off Heriot’s last week.

However, Dundee coach Ian Rankin is wary, saying: “Boroughmuir have had a frustrating run of results but have proved a real handful in every match and with Edinburgh releasing Visser and Leonard again our defence will need to step up to keep the lid on a very potent backline.”

Dundee are unchanged for the first time this season.

Edinburgh Accies’ hopes of finishing in the top four and claiming a British and Irish Cup place would be considerably boosted by a win at champions Melrose.

• Scotland under-20s are in action tonight at Galashiels hoping to make it five wins from six in meetings with Italy.
