Greening has great plans for rugby sevens

Newly-appointed Scotland sevens coach Phil Greening believes he is the man to produce a team capable of competing for honours at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The former England and British & Lions hooker was yesterday unveiled as the successor to Graham Shiel.

The new man at the helm said, “I want to cement the Scotland sevens team as one of the core competitors in the abbreviated game and help produce some exciting new Scottish rugby talents ahead of the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 2016 Olympics.”

Greening is the former England sevens assistant coach, and was in charge for two years at London Welsh before leaving last December for a post at Plymouth Albion which lasted only five weeks after the club lost financial backing.
Meanwhile, Scottish rugby great Gordon Waddell has died at the age of 75. Waddell, who was a product a Fettes College earned 18 caps at stand off for his country and played for the British Lions. He relocated to South Africa at the end of his international playing career and enjoyed success in business before being elected as a member of the South African Parliament in 1974.
