Exiles coach wants to bring more south in partnership with SRU

AN ENCOURAGING new relationship between the SRU and London Scottish is beginning to emerge, with the club’s coach, Simon Amor, hoping that Mark Robertson’s loan move to Richmond could be the first of many.

Ironically, Robertson was due to play against Scottish for Melrose, last weekend in the British and Irish Cup, but withdrew with a minor niggle.

Scottish won the game 28-12 with a team that featured half of its first-choice line-up according to coach Amor. On Monday, they return to Championship business away to Moseley, and Amor plans to put Robertson straight into his match squad.

He said: “If Mark is fit and ready, as I’m told he is, we’re keen to involve him straight away. He’s not here for long and it’s a move that will help us as well as him, because we have injuries on the wings and boys have been filling in for us.”

Relations between the SRU and the Richmond club have gained a better footing this season largely through the enthusiasm of the London club’s president, Rod Lynch, director Kenny Logan and Amor, and that of Graham Lowe, the SRU’s performance director. London Scottish are beginning to strengthen their squad, with Canadian star Adam Kleeburger also lined up for a debut on Monday, as they aim to push up the Championship table.

Amor hopes there can be mutual benefits in Scots such as Robertson wearing the famous navy jerseys with the red lion.

“It’s always a challenge bringing loan players in,” said Amor, “ because we’re working hard to build a strong squad ethos here. But when the player adds value to our squad, the players recognise that.

“This is a good move for us and Mark, who’s an exciting player, and I hope it’s the start of a very good relationship that can help to develop Scottish players and help Scottish rugby. That means a lot to this club.”

1 Insightful The problems of LS V SRU go back long before McGTelfer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Many years ago Gordon Waddel was picked at No10 in the " blues" trial side while his brother ,Alan, WHO WAS PLAYING FOR LS 3rdXV , was selected for the " whites" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A "Scottish Newspaper" carried an article at the time that , given the influence LS had at Murrayfield , " ...........should they be able to find a pair of boots to fit her , Mrs Waddel good also feature in the trial " To say that Scot's rugby supporters were less than pleased about the influence of LS to have AW selected is an understatement --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I played briefly at LS in the 1950's and to be honest they then were a club built on social levels

It is about time that the SRU saw London Scottish as a fundamental part of the Scottish rugby scene. The rebuffs of Telfer and McGeeghan have left a long legacy that needs to be eradicated and hopefull the supposedly new enlightened regime at Murrayfield will recognise this and foster a new relationship with the Exiles. There are no stronger supporters of Scottish rugby than the membership of LSFC.
