British & Irish Cup: Late pain for Dundee against Carmarthen

DUNDEE HSFP remain without a win in the British & Irish Cup, but will not come closer to ending that run than at Carmarthen

Scorers: Carmarthen: Try – J Dixon. Pens – J Maynard (5). Dundee: Tries – B Laursen, J Steele. Cons – J Steele (2). Pen – J Steele.

Having outscored their hosts two tries to one, to secure their first point of the campaign, there are lessons Ian Rankin’s side can learn ahead of the return tie at Mayfield on Saturday.

Director of rugby Rankin said: “We played some good rugby in patches and I thought we did enough to win the game, but the penalty count mounted against us [18-4] and Maynard was immaculate for Quins.”

Carmarthen opened the scoring when full-back James Dixon hit the line at pace to scorch clear. Opposite number Brandyn Laursen responded for Dundee, converted by Jack Steele who scored 12 points. Steele and Jack Maynard traded kicks to level the scores 17-17 as defences dominated a tense second half at Carmarthen Park. The deadlock was finally broken by another Dundee infringement late on that handed Maynard the chance to snatch victory.
