Armstrong picks up try of the month
VERSATILE Hawick back Lee Armstrong has picked up the RBS Try of the Month award for September for his National League score against Biggar.
The 23-year-old made the move from Hawick YM after helping to steer the junior club into Scottish rugby’s top 40, and collecting the National 2 Player of the Season award. His try last month, which came from his chase of a Rory Hutton kick, catch and sprint to the line, was picked out for special praise by Scotland’s specialist skills coach, the former Test fly-half Duncan Hodge, who stated that it was the type of skill that can turn games, and one more players in Scotland needed to practise.
“It’s not a skill you see in every match, so well done Lee,” he said.
A talented stand-off, centre and full-back, Armstrong commented: “I was in two minds whether to chase it at first. We have worked on our chase in training where you aim to catch the ball under pressure. I just remember jumping above the [Biggar] player, breaking through the tackle and, before I knew it, being on my way.”
Armstrong will receive a trophy from RBS and SRU to mark his achievement plus two tickets for a Scotland international at Murrayfield. See the try at:
