Moseley 16 - 13 Gala: Late drop goal breaks Gala’s hearts

GUTSY Gala were left shattered after a last-minute drop goal denied them a truly remarkable British and Irish Cup result, writes Brian Dick at Billesley Common.

George Graham’s men battled superbly for 80 minutes and having built a 13-0 half-time lead were well set to smash Pool Six wide open. A tenth minute penalty from Lee Millar gave them an early advantage and a long-range strike from Gavin Young lit up an otherwise error-strewn match.

A quarter-of-an-hour had gone when blindside Craig Keddie nicked the ball from the back of a ruck on his own 10m line and fed Evan Dods. The No 8 spotted Moseley’s unguarded right wing and sent Young flying down the sideline and past the full-back to make it 8-0. Millar converted and added a penalty on the half-hour but gradually the Championship outfit took control.

Ten minutes after the restart home full-back Billy Robinson picked his way over from close in.

Then Glyn Hughes added a penalty with a quarter-hour to go.

With Gala trapped in their own 22, Danny Herriott barrelled over from a yard out to level. Hughes missed the conversion but was to have one last opportunity when the hosts’ pack lined him up from 15 metres straight in front of the sticks to nick the victory.
