Oban Lorne skipper Robin MacQueen praised his side’s battling spirit after they lifted the RBS Bowl on Saturday following a cracking contest with Grangemouth Stags at Murrayfield.

Grangemouth Stag 14-19 Oban Lorne

Scorers: Grangemouth Stags – Tries: Jamieson, Sangster. Cons: Sangster (2). Oban Lorne – Tries: S Smith, MacDougall, McMillan. Cons: C Wright (2).

All the players involved for both regional league clubs gave everything they had on the biggest day of their careers and by the final whistle they were out on their feet.

The scoring was all done in the first 36 minutes with Oban Lorne’s tries coming from Struan Smith, Andrew MacDougall and Jamie McMillan with Craig Wright kicking two conversions. Grangemouth’s tries came from David Jamieson and Craig Sangster with the latter converting both of them.

Over the next 44 minutes there was no more scoring, but it was not for the want of trying.

In the second half the Oban Lorne pack seemed to get a second wind and took the upper hands which helped them protect their slender 19-14 lead.

Hooker MacQueen said: “It is just an amazing feeling for us to come to Murrayfield and win a trophy. The whole town has been so good at supporting us and the noise the supporters made was great and pushed us all on.

“In the first half both teams were really going for it and it was pretty energy sapping. However, we kept going and the guys put in a power of work after the break to keep them from scoring. When the final whistle went it was just a feeling of relief. This means so much to us all, from the younger players to those of us who have been around a bit longer.”

Grangemouth captain Colin McInally could not have been prouder of his charges and said: “The guys gave everything out there.

“The club has been making great strides in the last couple of years and we must keep that going.”

There was double disappointment for the Stags on Saturday when Glenrothes pipped them to the RBS Caledonia Midlands Two title after they won their game in hand.
