SCOTTISH Rugby has confirmed that the search for a new Edinburgh coach is being undertaken during the national side’s current tour of South Africa.
“We said that we would scour the world for coaches of the quality and desire to make a difference to Edinburgh Rugby but these discussions are ongoing not only in South Africa,” said a spokesman.
It is being reported a target is Alan Solomons but the one-time Ulster coach is under contract as Director of Rugby at Port Elizabeth-based Southern Kings and the Scots visit has coincided with the departure from a post at Natal Sharks of another mentor with experience of Celtic rugby. John Plumtree previously guided Swansea to the old Welsh/Scottish League title and may be available to hire.
However, kiwi Plumtree is understood to have strong ties with his wife’s home city of Durban and may have to be persuaded to uproot.
If Edinburgh land Solomons they will have a 62-year-old well versed in both Celtic League and European Cup.
After taking over Ulster in 2001 he steered them to a three-year unbeaten home record in Europe.
• Murrayfield Wanderers are on the look out for a new coach just two days after confirming the appointment of Borderer Jammy McFarlane.
McFarlane has announced that for “personal reasons” he is now unable to take up the post.
