Former player Andrew Skeen put a dent in Watsonians’ Kings of the Sevens hopes when he scored an extra-time try to knock them out of the Selkirk Sevens at the semi-final stage on Saturday.
A conversion in the dying seconds of normal time by captain Mike Ker had levelled things up at 14-14 against Melrose to take the match on further before Skeen’s intervention.
In the final, Melrose ran out of steam and went down 27-7 to the host club.
With just the Jed-Forest Sevens to come this coming weekend at Riverside Park, Melrose led the overall standings by four points from Watsonians.
Heriot’s went out of the Selkirk event in the first round to Gala, while Edinburgh Accies defeated Hawick, but then lost out to Gala in round two.
At the Hamilton Sevens in the Legacy Sevens Seriesm Boroughmuir reached the semi-final stage before going out. Howe of Fife were the overall winners. The Pigbarians charity team won the Perthshire Sevens.
