Hawick finally broke their Premiership duck this season with victory over Boroughmuir in a thrilling match that produced eight tries evenly split.
What ultimately separated the sides were penalty kicks, Boroughmuir’s propensity to infringe costing the visitors dearly.
Hawick led 15-12 at half time with tries from Bruce Campbell and Wesley Hamilton and a conversion and penalty from Neil Renwick. Muir’s first half points came from tries by Jordan Edmund and Craig Keddie and a conversion from Chris Laidlaw.
The Greens then extended their lead with a second try from Hamilton and two further penalty goals from Renwick. Muir hit back with an 80m try from Grant McConnell converted by Laidlaw, Hawick’s riposte a solo effort from Lee Armstrong, Renwick converting. Muir then produced a second try for McConnell converted by Laidlaw but a late penalty by Armstrong denied the visitors a losing bonus point.
