THE fact they made fewer mistakes allowed Ayr to defeat Gala in a bout of mud-wrestling,
The conditions mitigated against an expansive game, as the gale-blown heavy rain lashed down.
Stand-off David O’Hagan kicked the visitors ahead with a sixth minute penalty, answered in kind by opposite number Frazier Climo ten minutes later. O’Hagan then slotted a close-range penalty in 35 minutes.
However, concerted pressure by the home pack paid off in first-half injury time when Blair Macpherson spun off a ruck and over, Climo converted and the home side led 10-6 at the break.
The visitors put together a concerted period of pressure after some ten minutes of the second half and replacement Gary Robertson powered over. O’Hagan converted and the visitors led 13-10.
Gala then did a great job in holding Ayr at bay, until, with seven minutes left, a spot of indifferent kicking for position by both sides ended when Climo gathered a slack Gala effort, breached the defence and sent skipper Ross Curle over between the posts. Climo converted, then added a penalty to secure the points for the home side and leave Gala with a losing bonus point as scant reward for their efforts.
