Rugby: Porty keep up pressure to secure crucial bonus
TWO late tries helped Portobello to a crucial bonus-point victory over Dunbar in Scottish Hydro East One.
Portobello are four points behind leaders North Berwick with a game in hand after the East Lothian men also recorded an away win against Lismore. Duns are six points off the leaders.
Portobello played superbly at Hallhill on Saturday against a team who had won seven of 10 league matches this term prior to kick-off. Cameron Walker and Rory Thomson scored tries to put the visitors in the driving seat, but it was not until the last couple of minutes that they secured the all important bonus. Firstly captain Chris Thomas went over and then Sean Hollywood grabbed the fourth try with the last play of the match.
Skipper Thomas said: "Saturday was probably our best performance of the season so far."
Broughton boosted their quest to avoid relegation with a 16-7 home triumph over Hawick Harlequins.
Dalkeith thumped Liberton 122-0 in East Two, while leaders Moray House were held to an unusual 0-0 draw at Leith.
In the National Leagues Lasswade had the best result at the weekend, edging out previously unbeaten leaders Greenock Wanders 15-13 in a cracker at Hawthornden. Preston Lodge went down 21-9 at Highland in the same division.
In National One, Edinburgh University and Linlithgow both clocked up wins. The students won 34-20 away to Berwick with Linlithgow putting Annan to the sword 39-10 at Mains Park.
