Rugby: O'Connell says Gatland should rein in his ego
PAUL O'CONNELL has told Warren Gatland to keep his ego in check after comparing the Wales coach to Jose Mourinho.
O'Connell helped Ireland claim their first Grand Slam since 1948 with an epic display in Saturday's 17-15 victory over Wales – and then set his sights on Gatland.
The Kiwi taunted Ireland during the build-up to the Millennium Stadium RBS 6 Nations title decider by questioning their ability to handle pressure. He also stated that "out of all the teams in the Six Nations, the Welsh players dislike the Irish the most".
The Ireland camp was bemused by comments that O'Connell believes bear the hallmark of former Chelsea manager Mourinho.
"Jose Mourinho used to do a lot of it with Chelsea, taking the pressure off his players," said the Munster lock.
"You need a big ego to do that which he (Gatland) seems to have form his recent success as a coach. Perhaps he needs to get his feet back on the ground now."
